Environment and Charities
The Environment & Charities Representative has the responsibility of organising events that raise environmental awareness, as well as events that raise money for charities.
In 2018, the MCR began a food waste recycling programme. In addition to its implementation in the MCR, the programme is being piloted in several graduate accommodation buildings. We have also “twinned” our toilet with a toilet in Nepal! This means that we have donated to a non-profit that supports access to clean water and sanitation across the globe (https://www.toilettwinning.org/).
In May, 2018, an MCR bake sale raised £54 for Muscular Dystrophy, UK. Students also donated many household items and clothing to the Gatehouse organization in Oxford. Additionally, in March of 2018, graduate students held our annual “Auction of Promises.” The lots were mostly in the form of skills shares, including salsa lessons, kung-fu lessons, and the much-coveted evening of learning how to make pasta with the Principal’s husband, and master chef, Dom! Many thanks to all who made promises, and to those who bid for them. We raised a grand total of £684.10 for the charity Homeless Oxford.
In March of 2017, the “Auction of Promises” raised a grand total of £534 for the mental health charity Oxfordshire Mind. Particularly popular lots were a German language lesson, a guest ticket to formal dinner at high table, and a promise to send the buyer entertaining memes for a week!
