2018 Committee

President – Deborah Walnicki

Hello! My name is Deborah and I’m a second year MPhil student in International Development. As MCR President I work with the other committee members to organize the term card, and ensure that they have the support and resources they need to fulfill their roles. I also represent the graduate students of St. Hugh’s on various college and university committees, and chair General Meetings. Lastly, I’m a trained peer supporter, and can help you navigate any of the welfare structures in college and the university. Feel free to reach out at any time!

Vice-President – Claire Dobson

I’m Claire, and I’m the MCR Vice President. I’m currently studying in the second year of my DPhil in Evolutionary Biology and trying to work out how fish even became things (stop me if I’m getting too technical). I also get involved in a lot of MCR events so you’ll definitely see me around!

Secretary – Constance Crozier

Hi, I’m Constance – MCR Secretary, 2nd year DPhil student, 6th year Oxford student (someone pls let me out). I’m part of the Energy and Power Group in the Engineering Department and my research involves investigating the impacts of electric vehicles on the power grid. When I’m not despairing about the future of our planet and energy security, I can occasionally be found around the MCR – feel free to say hi! Suggested avoided topics of conversation (for your own good): electricity markets, hydrogen cars, environmental policy.

Welfare Officer (Male) – Benjamin Gibbons

My name’s Ben, and I’m doing a one year Master’s course in World Literature. Along with Alaina, I’m your welfare rep, which means that I’m here to help as much as I can with any welfare or mental-health related issues that might be affecting you. Recent research suggests that working 24 hours a day is bad for your health, so we’ll be putting on weekly sunday brunches, welfare Wednesdays and other events to try and persuade everyone to stop worrying about work from time to time. Look out for other events too! Apart from that, I can guide you through the welfare structures in place to give you any support that you might need during your time at Oxford. I was a welfare rep for the JCR a couple of years ago, and whilst I’m not trained in peer supporting, I always have time to chat about anything that might be up, or down. Please don’t be a stranger!

Welfare Officer (Female) – Alaina Oltrogge

Hi everyone, I’m a second-year MPhil student in General Linguistics and Comparative Philology, and I’ll be one of your MCR welfare reps. I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression in the past, and I know that navigating Oxford as a postgrad can be stressful! As such, mental health support is my top priority. We’ll be providing opportunities to spend time with friends and speak with peer supporters at weekly welfare nights and Sunday welfare brunches all term. I’m open to suggestions for welfare night activities, so let me know if there’s something you’d like us to plan. As welfare reps, we’re also here to provide emergency sexual health supplies; please speak to one of us for details! If you’re dealing with any welfare issues throughout term, or simply need someone to talk to, hit me up.

Wining and Dining Officer – Joshua Bull

Hi, I’m Josh and I’m your Wining and Dining Officer. I’m a third year DPhil student in Maths and am looking forward to inflicting my passion for wine and cheese on the MCR community. My job is to organise all our Formal events – dinners in St Hugh’s, as well as exchange events with other Colleges. Keep an eye out for emails from me about upcoming events, and feel free to email me with any questions!

Social Secretary – Olyvia Siekmann

I’m Olyvia, and I’m one of the Social Secretaries this year. I’m a second year MPhil studying Late Antique and Byzantine Studies. Artur and I are in charge of organising Friday Socials every week. Socials are a great way of relaxing and hanging out with your friends after a long week, so pop into the MCR on Fridays for some free drinks and possibly food. Don’t hesitate to e-mail if you have any questions, we’ll be happy to help.

Social Secretary – Artur Kula

Hi! I’m Artur, a Social Sec and a MSt student in British and European History. I love Avril Lavigne, what more can I say. Together with Olyvia we will try to organise terrific socials. If you have any questions or proposals for social events or you would like to chat about anything, feel free to contact me!

IT Representative – Seth Jenson

Hey, I’m Seth! I’m studying sociology betwixt my bachelor’s in finance and future DPhil in business strategy. As IT Rep, my job is to keep the internet going. I did a lot of AOL Instant Messenger as a kid, and my great, great uncle invented the TV (you’re welcome), so you’re in good hands. But really, feel free to let me know if you need anything!

Environment and Charities Representative – Elodie Powell

Hi, I’m Elodie, the Environment and Charities rep. I’m a first year MPhil student in Classical Archaeology and committed recycler of everything ever. My job in the MCR is to raise awareness about environmental and charity issues and to organise fundraisers/socials/other fun things. Please feel free to talk to me any time, if there’s anything you’d like me to work on with college or the MCR to raise awareness or money, or if you’d just like a chat!

Academic Representative -León Romano Brandt

Hi, I’m León, a first year DPhil student in Engineering Sciences and I’m delighted to be your Academic Representative. As such, my main task is to promote the interdisciplinary exchange of research and science during science talks, Research Cafes, etc. If you happen to be or know a great speaker who would like to share his or her ideas with the rest of the college, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Sports Representative – Isobel Talks

Hi! I’m Izzy, a first year DPhil student in Learning and New Technologies! A keen member of the OUWCC, I am ready to step up to the crease and bowl out some fantastic sporting events for you this coming year. Expect an old-school sports day (plimsolls and proud parents optional), a sports quiz and much, much more.
