The MCR does not have dedicated graduate-only clubs for all sports, but graduate students are welcome in all college sports clubs. Look for the St. Hugh’s JCR freshers’ fair during freshers’week to sign up, or look at the JCR website to find more information.
If you have any sports-related questions, such as suggesting a sports event or requesting sporting equipment, please don’t hesitate to contact our Sports Representative!
St Hugh’s MCR Football Club (SHMCRFC) was formed in Michaelmas 2012. It is a separate entity from SHFC, to which the three JCR teams belong. MCR members are allowed to play for any of the SHFC teams as well as SHMCRFC.
The MCR club was formed to create a team exclusively for MCR members and to better accommodate their playing needs. The MCR league level tends to be lower than that of the JCR leagues. Furthermore, matches are always on Saturday mornings, so as not to interfere with people’s weekday schedules. SHMCRFC does not have official training sessions, but does frequently have ‘kick-about’ sessions on a 6v6 AstroTurf pitch. The club highly encourages people to attend these as an opportunity to keep fitness levels up and improve your skills.
In its inaugural season, the club finished fifth (out of 10) in its division – with 4 wins and 1 draw from 9 games. We also progressed to the quarter finals of the MCR Cup. We became fully independent for 2013-14 and won 6 out of 8 league matches, finishing second in the league and securing promotion. In 2014-15 we won 8 out of 9 league matches, gaining promotion again, this time to the top MCR league.
For more info, questions, etc., please join the SHMCRFC facebook page.
As with most colleges, we have our own Boat Club, and rowing plays a big part in St Hugh’s social life. Everyone interested in rowing is welcome to join regardless of their experience, and many people take up the sport for the first time each year. For information on rowing at St Hugh’s, rowing in general, races and socials visit the Boat Club’s website and get in touch with the men’s or women’s captain under ‘Get involved’.
St. Hugh’s has a gym available for MCR and JCR members. Please visit the college gym website for more information including the application form. It is mandatory to attend an introduction session (max. 1hr), which will run in the first two weeks of Michaelmas term. Watch out for an e-mail from the college Accommodation Officer to sign up!
The college’s football pitch, cricket field and tennis courts are near Summertown and are shared with Keble. We also have access to squash courts at Wolfson. Table tennis, pool, table football, and darts can be played in the college bar. MCR members may play croquet on the college croquet lawn or the MCR lawn.
